Raw Data:

Books – 15

Pages – 4374

Words – 1382k

Average Rating – 3.67

The Bad:

None. Not a single book was less than a 3star and I don’t want to start creating a “Mediocre” section. So no Bad Books!

The Good:

Yotsuba Vol, 14 – 5 stars of Perfection

Requiem for Medusa – 4 stars of gung-ho space opera action.

Movie:

Season One of the Muppet Show went just fine! Really looking forward to the next 2 seasons I own on dvd.

Miscellaneous Posts:

Personal:

This month was all over the place, much like the weather. Work was steady (which is always good!) but they tried pressuring us to 50hr weeks near the beginning of the month (which was bad). Every time they gave us the old “gotta work longer and harder” speech we just nodded and said “yep, sure, uh huh” and kept to our 9hr day. Except for when we didn’t. I suspect May we’re going to stick to 9hrs period. I was exhausted by the end of this month.

The weather. We had a week where I was in short sleeves the whole week. Then in the middle of the month we got a bloody snowstorm! Of course, it was only an inch and the rain immediately washed it all away, but still, come on, a snow storm? Good thing I kept my smartwool winter socks out.

Reading was good. While nothing was super duper spectacular, the fact that nothing was below a 3 meant I could just coast. It is just so nice when your books make your life easier.

Cover Love:

The Ruby Knight definitely wins this month’s cover love. And despite Ol’10‘s many protests in the comment section of the review about me lying down on the job, I’d just like to point out that to this day I have yet to see ONE dead monster as evidence of him doing any actual work. His monthly raisin allotment has been curtailed for May. Let that be a lesson to you all! There can be severe consequences to commenting on this blog.

Plans for Next Month:

Since I finished up Yotsuba, I now have to choose another manga to dive into. I think I’m going to take a break in May and look around and see what looks appetizing. So no Manga Monday’s for May.

The Muppet Show Season 2 is on tap and should deliver some nice light entertainment.

Mr Zip is getting a new stuffed companion and he’s all set to make his debut on the blog this month with at least 2 posts. Mr Zip would have been jealous but I bribed him with a bucket of chicken fingers so he’s happy as a monkey ๐Ÿ˜‰

I found an old box of comics and was digging through them to see if they were appropriate for a 12 year old at church. The only series I wasn’t sure about was called Cyber Force. I’m going to be reading and reviewing those. Five issues at 32 pages a pop shouldn’t be hard to deal with.

Other than that, we’ll play it by ear. My goal is to finally get 4 weeks ahead of publishing schedule but we’ll see if I can do that or not. I really like having a 4 week buffer in case something comes up and I don’t want to write.

  1. My comment; that I am the fearsome warrior, and you are face down in the pancake mix, is as valid now as it was then. There were no consequences other than the world marvelling at my coolness and pitying your weak effort to be a hero.

      1. This is a weird US thing. Employers give people a contract to work 48 hours a week (which is way above the 38 hours customary in Europe) and expect them to work for 60 hours without any compensation for overtime. Or risk to get a negative evaluation and be declared redundant by the end of the year.

          1. I just know some people who used to work in the IT and that was their case. If they didn’t put in at least 60 hours, they were made redundant while their contract spoke of 48 hours work week. They had to beg their employers to get 2 weeks off (without pay). Non-competing clauses in their contract made it almost impossible for them to find a job elsewhere in their field of competence. And I’m even not talking about the many Indian IT’ers who just risk to lose their green card when they change of employer (because of before said issues).

  2. Looks like you had a good month. I really like several of the covers, including the entire top row, but yes, “The Ruby Knight” is the best…

    1. I tried that years ago soon after watching FMA. I thought the original FMA was fantastic. Sadly, the manga was so similar that it felt like watching stills from the anime, in black and white.

The library does have a bunch and I might go there if nothing else catches my attention.

  3. No bad books? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
The weather was weird over here as well. We spent the Easter weekend at my parents… when we drove there it was 23C, when we drove back home it was snowing (which we hadnโ€™t packed for…).
Do you get payed overtime? (People at the zoo who have a fixed hour contract get time-for-time… as in they have to make 60+hr weeks sometimes, and then later are forced to take time off).

    1. No bad books! Isn’t that great? ๐Ÿ˜€

Yeah, we had a snow storm and tshirt weather all mixed together. My body didn’t know how to react, hahahahaa.

Yep, anything over 40hrs I get time and a half. I much prefer that to what you describe. Of course, our office manager manages to manipulate things for weeks when there is bad weather. So, work 10hrs on monday, then 9hrs for the rest of the week but get half a day off because of rain. We still manage to work 40hrs.

But when I get overtime, it is a big increase for our bank account ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. Well jeey to that at least. Luckily Dave and I just get payed for whatever hours we work. No difficult calculations with overtime and minus hours ๐Ÿ™ˆ and at the vaccination centre it is even better sorted: I get payed the hours I was put up for on the schedule (so if I get sent home early I still get payed the full day), unless I work more, then I just get payed those extra. And in weekends, early mornings and late evenings I get payed double. Healthcare isnt all bad…

  4. Lookin’ forward to those comic book posts!

Excellent round up at that. I gotta get back into reading at night time. There’s too many things I want to do between exercising, reading, writing and posting – there’s not enough time!

    1. Thankfully, (depending on how you look at it), qualified tradesmen in our field of work are wicked rare, so if things ever got too bad I could up and leave and have another job the same day.

          1. We’re getting the cold weather now – I know the temperatures in NZ seem laughable in comparison with yours, but at least houses in the US are built well enough that don’t drop temperature 10 degrees C down within one night ๐Ÿ˜‰ Today we had 14 degrees inside…

  5. I snagged my old comics (about 3 boxes worth that have survived) from my mom’s house a few years ago. I’ve been meaning to sit down and reread them. Mostly Marvel, especially Spider-Man and X-Men, comics from the mid-90s.

    1. THe 90’s were the best time, imo, to be a comic book fan ๐Ÿ˜€

I had all 4 holograph covers for Spidey’s 30th anniversary along with venom #1. sold them for a nice turnaround. as I was never going to read them, it worked out well ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. I had the comic with Carnageโ€™s first appearance as well as his first cover. At least one of those got destroyed because I let it live between my bed and the wall for a couple weeks.

It would have been worth real money at the time, but Iโ€™m not sure what that means now. The collectorsโ€™ market was a little crazy. I should have sold years ago. I think my collection has appreciation roughly 0% in 20+ years.

    1. It took me a year to get that far ahead. I started by not posting for a week and putting them all into the next week. Then I just took it from there ๐Ÿ™‚
Of course, it’s not for everyone, just like my reading rotation is just for me.

Thanks. I’m pretty much taking work a day at a time right now :-/
