Publishers Description
The gold strike which led the fortune-hunters to Murrayville brought with them the usual proportion of bad men and outlaws. Three months after the rush started, a bandit appeared so consummate in skill and so cool in daring that all other offenders against the law disappeared in the shade of his reputation. He was a public dread. His comings were unannounced; his goings left no track. Men lowered their voices when they spoke of him. His knowledge of affairs in the town was so uncanny that people called him the ‘Ghost.’
My Thoughts: |
Oh, this was a fun little story! The town drunk is just playing a part but it’s obvious from the getgo so no spoilers there. What makes this really interesting is how he manipulates the townsfolks and the manhunter hired to catch him. It is masterfully done and you can hear the laughter in the background the whole time.
These short stories of Brand’s are working out perfectly for me. Good stuff.
The bandit is me, I am the bandit.

This was just fun. Some westerns are serious or dealing with romance, but this? It was just pure fun 🙂

I’ve heard the new Tom Hanks film is pretty good.

FilmAuthority, better known as Ol’10 around here, reviewed it recently. We were too busy making fun of each other for me to pay attention to the actual review 😀
Outside of The Burbs and his Meg Ryan movies, Hanks never drew me in as an actor.

Never heard of this author before. Do need more westerns in my life, though. Especially at only 23 pages. No real loss if I dislike it and much love if I do.
Glad to see you had a better time with this than Children of Ruin!

I think Brand was a strictly american writer in the early days of the westerns. I know most of his stuff was serialized in magazines…

Certainly explain why I’ve not come across him before

Sometimes a short story just hits the spot perfectly.

Nice to hear how these shorter Westerns work quite well for you. Hope you can get your hands on more of them!

With this collection I’m reading, there doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to what has been included. I kind of feel like I’m on one of those Disney rides and I’m just there to look at the scenery.
