Ok, this post will be dealing with a lot of Magic the Gathering cards. It will be at a level of detail that even I wouldn’t care enough if someone else were writing this, so please, feel free to skip this entire post and don’t even bother liking unless you like MTG or something.
A new set is coming out, called Dominaria. I have already pre-ordered a box from my local gamestore and am seriously thinking of playing my first public pre-release. Anyway. I was perusing Scent of a Gamer’s post about MTG: Art and one of the pictures was of a Paladin, aka, a Knight. We got to chatting and before I knew it, I was seriously thinking of creating a Knight based Commander Deck. The reason I mentioned Dominaria is because it looks like there will be a lot of knights and things that help knights in this release. I’m pretty stoked to be honest.
I’ve spent the last 2 days going through Gatherer, Wizards of the Coasts online database of every single magic card, looking for cards I can use to create a 100 card deck. I didn’t think it would be real hard, as I wasn’t aware of a lot of knights or things that helped them out. Boy, was I wrong. I ended up with over 180, and that was after weeding out cards that I knew I simply couldn’t afford. One card was close to $90, so that was out. And as the release date of Dominaria gets closer, more cards are going to be officially spoiled and I bet we’ll see even more knights and stuff. So this list will be changing even after I figure out what I want to weed out.
Here is my list. Roughly organized, linked to Gatherer.com and to Mythicspoiler.com. I wish I could figure out how to make a link show the card when you hover over it. I’ve seen that at several forums, but it might have something to do with the forum hosting all the pictures. I’m sure not going to add 200 pictures just for one post. That would add a lot to my media and 3 gb is not an infinite amount. However, if any of you know how to do such a thing, let me know would you?
I’ve got a lot of work to do to cut this list down to only 100 cards. I’ll probably go through and weed out any $25+ cards first (goodbye Tutors I suspect). I am NOT spending 1K on bloody cardboard. Next step will be to see what mechanics are global versus individual and include more of the global. Then I’ll just see what mechanics I don’t care about and get rid of cards focused on them. Next will be to winnow out the creatures that have more powerful existing counterparts already on the list. I figure this is going to be an ongoing project for most of the year as I slowly build it up.

I wish I understood this! I had an ex who loved MTG and I always wanted to get into it and never really had the chance.
I did use to play Yu-Gi-Oh though!

Magic is very similar to Yugioh and once you get used to the very small changes, you could easily play. MTG is more fantasy oriented though.
It also helps if you have people to play it with. That’s one of my issues. Being an introvert, I am NOT going to walk into my local game store and just play with random strangers 😦

That’s actually a nice system that implies a lot of dedication to the game. Yu-Gi-Oh was definitely my go-to game back then, and collecting them was a curse on me (I’ve had so many of them, I had boxes filled with common/uncommon crap that I would never touch). I’m sort of convinced that if I were still into any card game like these I’d probably end up doing something similar to you hahah Good luck, sir!

I’ve actually got about 3K of uncommon and common mtg boxed away. I need to put all my rares and mythics into a binder. Sigh, all these add to up to so much crap lying around 😀

Haahahah for real. I got rid of them and kept all my super/ultra rare + in a binder. I’m assuming they are probably worth a lot by now. 😀

Honestly I’d recommend a mono-white Knight Commander like Danitha Capashen. Building around a theme of knights and equipment brings cards like Puresteel Paladin into play too. Have roughly 30 knight creatures, 12 equipment, 10 removal cards and 6-8 ‘other’ such as Gideon Ally of Zendikar who makes Knights. You’ll be good to go.

I’m probably going to stick with the black/white because I just want that godcard out on the field to annoy my friend 😀 That and I like the whole East, West, North, South paladin thing 🙂
However, we’ll see. It might end up being untenable to do and then I’ll have to retry from the ground up. This list at least gives me most of my base to work from.

I played MTG back in the day 🙂 It’s one of those things where if you don’t keep it up though, you start to get rusty not to mention fall behind on all the new sets coming out. Ah, I wish I had the time to pick it up again, or have people to actually play with

Having people to play with is a big thing for me. My former co-worker has issues so he can’t always travel to the library on sundays and my bro will only play once a month or so. He enjoys it, but not enough to try to play every week.

Did you play mtgo or mtgduels? I played duels for a while. Once Arena goes live I might look into that as well.

Spelweaver looks very much the same as mtg, cardwise… the missus and i play it over the 10000km we have between us from time to time

I’m not a player, but it’s interesting to see the level of detail that goes into it.
Could your opponent gain an advantage by seeing what you post about your deck?

Technically they could gain an advantage. But the reality is that I’m such a casual player and the guy I play with is also so casual that it wouldn’t hurt/help.
It would be like Joe Worker posting about his tells in his Friday night poker game.

I have never looked into MTG, but have a couple of friends who are into it.
It makes me happy to see that it makes you guys happy 😀 Always great to have something you can get so excited about. That’s what life is about^^

I tend to go through phases with mtg. I’ll spend a month or two and put a lot of time into it then it tapers off for a year, rinse and repeat 🙂

I’ve still got a deck from a few years ago and always wished I had more people to play against. I think I still have a stack of Yu-Gi-Oh cards too. Never more than a super casual player but it was nice when my brother and I were younger since there was always someone to play.
