What went wrong? Personally I’ve never gotten to book two, but all I ever hear is it gets so great after four or five books.

Honestly, I have no idea now. This was from 2012 (I’m currently polishing up old posts and creating new ones that never made it in the first place).
I suspect it was me finally having enough of Harry being such a whiny loser and not only playing by the rules setup by a corrupt council, but actively ignoring it when his enemies broke the same rules.
I kept waiting for this series to “get better” from the get-go and it never did. The only reason I hung on SO long was because my brother and cousin were both huge fans and they kept telling me “it gets better”.
So to be blunt, it does not get better. Just more of the same.
